Great time at Magic Con 7

in

The first weekend of October was Magic Con 2024 in Bonn and I totally forgot about writing how it went. It was exciting, attending this con for the first time ever. We had a good time at the stall of the Verlag in Farbe und Bunt. The best news: We’re going to be there in 2025 again!

In comparison to the FedCon (same host, same location) Magic Con is smaller. It’s not as crowded and feels more dreamy and cosy, for lack of a better word. The audience also feels different: more female attendees where FedCon has more male guests. Although it would be unfair to fuel the old cliché that science fiction is only for guys – there are more and more women each year at FedCon.

At cons, you get tv series FOMO

I was surprised to see that apparently fantasy and sci-fi fans don’t always mix. I’d expected to see more familiar faces at the con but there were only a few. Maybe that was partly due to the guest stars who were dominantly from Shadow and Bone, the still young-ish Netflix series that doesn’t have as big a following yet as established franchises like Star Trek. Shame on me, I had no idea what the series was all about and could not participate in fan talk. This has now been rectified. I had a lot of time on my hands to binge the series after the con.

One of the things I love most about cons is watching the stunning cosplays. Magic Con is no exception. There were so many amazing cosplayers. Too bad, I didn’t have an opportunity to photograph them all. Most of the time, I spent at the stall talking to customers or my dear colleagues.

Another postitive aspect about Magic Con: like FedCon it’s a hotel convention and not in an exhibition hall. The atmosphere is very pleasant and laidback, as well as the audience. I’m definitely looking forward to attending it another time next year!

The not so pleasant aftermath

What did I expect? It’s autumn and therefore cold season. One day after the con, I got ill and it lasted almost two weeks (and also ruined my holidays, yay). On the upside, this was when I had the time to binge-watch Shadow and Bone, so I knew in hindsight what everybody had been talking about at the con.

Now everything’s almost back to normal and I’l get back to work. There are two more book covers that I need to work on. Can’t wait to see them published! The finished artwork will follow asap so you can have a look.

Thanks for reading and take care! Get safely through cold season!
