Save the new Stargate series!

in

It’s not over yet, Stargate fans will not go down without a fight. Before this turns into a rant, here are the facts:

  • Six months ago, it was confirmed that there would be a brand-new Stargate series produced on Amazon prime / MGM.*
  • It was not supposed to be a complete reboot but rather a continuation of the already existing timeline. With new characters, of course but building up on old stories and characters.*
  • Martin Gero, Brad Wright and Joseph Mallozzi and many of the original writers would be on the team for the new series.*
  • Fans all over the world were hyped that they would get a true spin-off that would be consistent with canon by the able hands of the people who brought us so many amazing, unforgettable episodes of Stargate.

But on 2 June 2026, all those hopes were shattered when it was made public that Amazon / MGM would not go forward with this new series. Even though there was already work put into pre-production including casting in early stages, the show was shelved.

Well, us Stargate fans are known for having dealt with bummers like this numerous times in the past. No sixth season of Stargate:Atlantis, no continuation of Stargate:Universe, no more movies. Yet, we have kept the gate open all this time, never giving up hope completely. We kept rewatching the series over and over, we went to conventions to cheer for our stars and meet fellow fans, with or without costumes. We created fanfiction and fanart galore (signed, yours truly). The years go by but we still love Stargate.

And then Amazon / MGM disrespect us. Apparently, they don’t care about us anymore. Because the reason of why the new show was shelved is (I hope you’re seated, you may want to sit down. Or, alternatively smash a window or two.):

Amazon / MGM were too concerned the new show would only cater to old fans and would not attract a young, fresh audience.

Let this carefully sink in. Stargate fans are known for passing on their fandom love to their kids and there are so many young fans at conventions. Kids and teens who grew up with Stargate because they watched it with their parents. Much comparable to a generation-spanning franchise like StarTrek. Stargate has always been known for having a stable and incredible loyal fanbase even though we f*cking did not get anything new for almost twenty years.

If you’re even a little vexed by this, please consider signing this petition:

Even though a petition may not be successful, it’s still a way of making our voices heard. Spread the word! Feeling a little helpless here by not being able to do more but on the other hand – Hey, I’ve done a thing or two over the years by providing a little smile for everyone who misses SGA as much as I do.

I am realistic. I’m aware that Amazon / MGM are not producing shows for altruistic reasons. It’s a business and needs to make money. Therefore, examining carefully the target group of a new series is essential. But, as I stated above, I’m really convinced that this would totally work because there already are new and young fans.

It’s hard to stay neutral on this one because Stargate is so important to me. Am I overreacting over a cancelled sci-fi show? Possibly. Yes, there are more important things in life, of course! But I don’t exaggerate if I say that my life today would be different without Stargate. And I know people who claim that Stargate has helped them though dark times in their lives. It is a much beloved franchise and it hurts to see how badly it is treated, and also the people behind it that put so much effort into this.

Thanks for reading and keep the gate open,
DS
